The room at 1017 North Highland used to be Farm Burger. Today the cabinetry, tables and standing bar are white oak from Silt Studio, and the banquettes are orange leather from B10 Union, a color that hints at the fox in the name. The room holds about 50 guests. Large windows face the street, and every menu is stamped with the day's date. On October 21, 2026, the MICHELIN Guide American South awarded So. Fox one star. It was the restaurant's first appearance in the Guide, and it had opened in July.
For residents, the important part is how the restaurant works day to day. A star usually means a new crowd and a harder reservation. So. Fox opened with a few features that keep a seat within reach for someone who lives a few blocks away. Those features matter more now than they did in July, and the timing works out well, because the restaurant's open nights fall on the same dates as the neighborhood's own events for the rest of the year.
What the Inspectors Saw on North Highland
So. Fox is the first full-service restaurant from chef Myles Moody and sommelier Rachael Pack, the owners of Kinship Butcher & Sundry, as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported in June. Michelin's write-up describes a dining room in the "tree-lined Virginia-Highland area." It says the room is "upscale yet relaxed" with "a minimalistic Scandi-Japanese flair," and it names dishes such as Carolina Gold rice with toasted shrimp and drop dumplings with nettle and confit rabbit. Only two Georgia restaurants entered the Guide with a star this year. So. Fox was one of them. The other was Uberto Restaurant, at the Quercus property in Gay, about an hour south of Atlanta.
Much of what is on the plate comes from close by. Moody visits Under Acre Farm every morning for garnishes and ingredients. He put it this way to Resy:
"I like to think that where Kinship is a whole animal program, So. Fox is a whole plant program."
The cocktails follow the same seasonal approach. The list is short, and some cordials and tinctures are made with black walnuts and kudzu blossoms. Pack's wine list leans toward low-intervention producers, with Sicily's COS among her favorites. On the Michelin restaurant page, the menu reads as Southern. The thinking behind it comes from the kitchen garden.
The Door the Restaurant Built In
None of this is new to anyone who has eaten there since summer. What the star changes is the competition for a table, and here the house rules are what matter.
Resy's August profile laid out the policy. Reservations open 30 days in advance, and walk-ins are welcome, with several dining-room tables held back every night. The same article said reservations were already booked weeks out. That was two months before the star.
Three details from that profile matter more after October 21:
- The walk-in hold. Tables kept back each night are the main way in for anyone who didn't book a month ahead, and a neighbor on foot can get there faster than most.
- The Zipper Bar. This standing area was designed to give guests room for a full meal, so it is meant for dinner. It is not a place to hold a drink while you wait.
- The parking lot. So. Fox has its own free lot, which is unusual on North Highland.
The restaurant's own site lists hours of Thursday through Monday, 5 to 10 p.m. It is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. The walk-in hold is an August policy, so ask at the host stand before you count on it. As of the last published description, though, a starred dining room in Virginia-Highland still keeps tables for whoever walks in.
A Star on a Street That Already Had Listings
So. Fox did not arrive on an empty block. Several other Michelin-listed restaurants sit along the same stretch of North Highland and around the corner on Ponce, and each kept its 2025 status this year:
| Restaurant | Address | 2026 Michelin status | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| So. Fox | 1017 N. Highland Ave. NE | One Star, new | Core Virginia-Highland |
| Madeira Park | 640 N. Highland Ave. NE | Recommended, retained | Core North Highland |
| Fishmonger | 674 N. Highland Ave. NE | Bib Gourmand, retained | Ponce City Market edge |
| Georgia Boy | 1043 Ponce de Leon Ave. NE | Recommended, retained | Ponce and BeltLine edge |
| Southern Belle | 1043 Ponce de Leon Ave. NE | Recommended, retained | Ponce and BeltLine edge |
Michelin's Atlanta selection page currently counts nine one-star restaurants, 12 Bib Gourmands and 38 selected restaurants across the city. That puts one of Atlanta's nine stars on North Highland. Fishmonger's Bib Gourmand and the Recommended listings for Madeira Park, Georgia Boy and Southern Belle were all on the 2025 lists and carried into this year. The only new line on the 2026 table is So. Fox's, and it is the only star on it.
The Neighborhood Calendar Lines Up With the Open Nights
Because So. Fox is open Thursday through Monday, most of Virginia-Highland's dated events from now through mid-December fall on nights the dining room is serving. Each of these events puts neighbors on the street in the late afternoon, and the walk-in tables are held from 5 p.m.
| Date | What's happening | So. Fox that night |
|---|---|---|
| Sun., Nov. 1 | Milk & Maple Coffeehouse opening day, doors at 7 a.m. | Open |
| Sat.–Sun., Nov. 7–8 | Virginia Row Fall Block Party, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. | Open |
| Thu., Nov. 12 | Last day for $35 early-bird Tour of Homes tickets | Open |
| Thu., Dec. 3 | Murphy's tree lighting, if the first-Thursday tradition holds | Open |
| Sat.–Sun., Dec. 12–13 | Winterfest and Tour of Homes | Open |
Start at the trail. Milk & Maple Coffeehouse set Sunday, Nov. 1 as its opening day. It is at 730 Ponce de Leon Place NE, inside Chabad Intown next to Be Hot Yoga, a few steps from the Eastside Trail. Urbanize Atlanta reported a 7 a.m. opening and a menu of coffee, matcha, tea, salads, sandwiches, pastries and smoothies, served from a café that faces the patio.
The next weekend moves to Virginia Avenue. The Virginia Row Fall Block Party runs Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7 and 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., centered on ASH Coffee at 1189 Virginia Ave. NE. About twenty vendors will set up along the street, with art and live music, and all the shops on Virginia Row are hosting. Those shops include ASH Coffee and Ztunes Music Studio. The party ends at 4, an hour before So. Fox opens its doors.
The middle of November brings a deadline. Early-bird tickets for the Virginia-Highland Tour of Homes cost $35 if bought before November 13. After that the price is $40 per person, and online sales close one week before the tour. If the 30-day booking window still holds, So. Fox reservations for Saturday, Dec. 12 would open around Nov. 12. Securing a tour ticket and a dinner table for that weekend then comes down to the same few days.
December starts with a tradition. The Virginia Highland District describes Murphy's annual tree lighting as a first-Thursday-in-December event with caroling and cocoa. On that schedule it would fall on Dec. 3, though no 2026 event notice has been posted.
Winterfest Weekend, Hour by Hour
The busiest weekend of the season is Dec. 12 and 13, and Saturday carries most of it, from an 8 a.m. race start to the tour's 6 p.m. close, with a shorter Sunday tour. The Winterfest schedule and the tour hours stack up as follows:
- 8 a.m. Saturday: the Jingle Jog 5K starts.
- 9 a.m.: the Elf Dash follows the jog.
- 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.: the Winterfest gift market is open.
- 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Kids Corner runs.
- Noon to 6 p.m.: the Tour of Homes opens its doors, then repeats Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
The tour shows homes decorated for the holidays, from historic bungalows to revival-style houses. Proceeds go to the Virginia-Highland Civic Association for parks, preservation and community programs. The tour closes at 6 p.m. on Saturday, an hour after So. Fox begins serving at 5. That makes a walk-in table at the end of the tour a realistic plan, for a neighbor who doesn't have far to walk.
A Michelin star on North Highland is good news for the dining room, and through the end of the year it is just as useful to the people who live nearby. If you have been watching North Highland change this year, from the former Farm Burger at 1017 to a dining room Michelin now names, and want to talk about what a stretch like this means for the homes along it, Debra Johnston is glad to share how she reads it.
